MADD wants GTA IV re-rated

1 05 2008

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) wants Grand Theft Auto to be re-rated by the ESRB and be changed from a Mature (M) rating to an Adults Only (AO) rating.

Each year nearly 13,500 people die in drunk driving crashes and another half a million are injured in alcohol-related traffic crashes. This is why MADD is extremely disappointed by the decision of the manufacturers of the game Grand Theft Auto IV to include a game module where players have to drive drunk.

Drunk driving is not a game and it is not a joke. Drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime and it is also 100 percent preventable. MADD is calling on the Entertainment Software Ratings Board to reclassify Grand Theft Auto IV as an Adults Only game, a step up from the current rating of Mature and for the manufacturer to consider a stop in distribution – if not out of responsibility to society then out of respect for the millions of victims/survivors of drunk driving.

I argree with Raymond, GTA seems to be singled out because of its success. There are plenty of other games with the same degree of voilence and just because kids see this in a game doesnt mean they are actually going to relive it!

Unbelievable how they didn’t find anyone to attack so they chose what was the simpliest to attack…..+agree with you raymond.

I actually think that MADD makes a great point. Sure, there are numerous other violent games out there, but has any game before this encouraged you to drive drunk as part of the game? I’m not sure that an AO rating is the right course of action, but certainly its inclusion is a shameful slap in the face to all the innocent lives taken by the numerous fools who drive drunk each year. It almost seems as if the designers intend to offend everyone they possibly can to generate the free (negative) publicity. For the games industry as a whole, this is a dangerous road that could eventually lead to government censure, and I don’t think anyone wants that.

If kids that play the game can’t distinguish a game from reality, they should be in the mental ward anyway.

Actually, the game in no way encourages you to drive drunk. the feature they are referring to “allows” you too, but it also gives other options such as “sobering up”, or “taking a cab”. Even if you do decide too drink in the game it seriously handicaps your abilities. Play the game and tell me you still feel the same way. shame on everyone who wags a finger without doing some sort of research.

Holy smokes, MADD just drove whatever credibility they had right off the cliff. First off, what the heck is a game “module”. Second of all, PLAYERS DO NOT HAVE TO DRIVE DRUNK! They can also either wait to sober up, or call a taxi. And if they do elect to drive drunk, the GAME PENALIZED THEM FOR IT. GTA IV actually pushes forward MADD’s declared agenda. Of course, praising a game squarely in the public eye doesn’t gather nearly as much attention as stridently denouncing it, does it?

Laziness and stupidity make me MADD.

RAAAAGE! You see, this is what’s wrong with the big name organizations. They don’t even get their accusations correctly. Yes, in GTA IV, you can drive drunk, but you don’t have to. As a matter of fact, the game pretty much encourages you to take a taxi. Driving drunk in the game is in no sense enjoyable, and the cops pull you over pretty much immediately, it’s not something I would want to do in-game or out. I’ll feel some respect towards MADD once they get their facts straight.
